We offer alternative styles of service. The range of styles allows flexibility to adapt our services to the specific financial needs, goals, and preferences of each client.

Alternative Styles of Service

Clients can choose from several alternative styles of service. Here is an overview of the range of financial services we provide.

These alternative styles of services are typical: (1) financial education (2) financial consulting, (3) financial planning, (4) financial advising, and (5) financial management. Of course we can tailor each one to the specific situation for each client engagement.

  • Financial education. We provide information and conduct workshops, presentations, correspondence, etc. that help people, usually folks who are not clients, learn concepts and information about their financial well-being. Typically, we provide such service at no cost to the client. For some programs, sponsors pay the cost of such events.
  • Financial consulting. This style typically involves providing information that responds to questions by a client facing a specific issue or series of concerns. Clients usually pay an hourly or quoted fee for such professional service. Alternatively, some investment providers pay the cost for such service in the form of commissions on behalf of the client.
  • Financial planning. This service develops a comprehensive view of the client’s financial situation and goals then offers alternative paths and strategies for achieving their goals within a timeline. It includes periodic monitoring of progress to assure that performance by both the client and the client’s portfolio are progressing according to the plan. Periodic monitoring also flags indicators that might suggest the need for adjusting the client’s financial plan. Clients usually pay an hourly or quoted fee for such professional service. Alternatively, some investment providers pay the cost of the planning in the form of commissions on behalf of the client.
  • Financial advising. With this style of service, we recommend actions by the client and assist with executing financial transactions in line with the client’s financial goals and risk profile. The usual compensation for this style of service involves an annual or quarterly fee.
  • Financial management. Some clients ask us to assume management of their portfolio, or a portion of it, to manage according to specific instructions. Typically, we engage professional money managers to make those day-to-day investment decisions. The usual compensation for this style of service involves an annual or quarterly fee.

One of the issues we discuss with each client early in the relationship is this. ”Which of the alternative styles of service do you prefer?”

The specific alternative style of service to choose should be appropriate to the financial situation of each client. Choosing the style of service that seems appropriate should match careful consideration of a number of relevant factors.

Such relevant factors might include some combination of these: life stage of the client(s), financial resources available presently, financial goals and timelines, investment horizon, client’s financial sophistication, level of risk tolerance, existing investment assets, anticipated future needs for cash flow (e.g., retirement income needed & when), special circumstances or financial needs (e.g., anticipated major expenditures in the future) such as for health care, auto purchase, change in housing, charity, support for others (child, parent, etc), trust provisions, business entity interests, and others.

A related topic for discussion is why that style is preferable. In other words, “What reason(s) for preferring that alternative style of service are important to you?” Typical responses vary. Some clients consider cost. Some consider flexibility (Can I change my mind?) Some want to test the relationship before making a full commitment. Some who are new to working with a financial professional want to check their own discipline and ability for making decisions about their own financial goals and resources.

Of course, the client makes the decision. We try to be very supportive and accommodating as clients work through that decision making process.
